Chapter 7: Add and Subtract Fractions
In Chapter 7 students will:
Vocabulary: fraction – a number that names part of a while or part of a group numerator - the part of a fraction above the line which tells how many parts are/not being counted denominator – the part of the fraction below the line which tells how many equal parts there are in a whole or a group mixed number – an amount given as a whole number and a fraction (3 1/2) unit fraction – a fraction that has a numerator of one simplest form - a fraction in which the numerator and denominator have only 1 as a common factor Associative Property of Addition - the property that states that when the grouping of addends is changes, the sum is the same (ex. 7 + 3 + 2 = (7+3) + 2 or (3+2) + 7) Commutative Property of Addition - the property that states that when the order or two or more addends is changes, the sum is the same (ex. 3 + 4 = 4 + 3) |

Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers. (CC.4.NF.3) a. Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole. b. Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8. c. Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., be replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction. d. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. |
